Abatement by Encasement: Safeguarding People while Saving MoneyTM

Power Plant Stacks – Florida

Case History

Power Plant Stacks

This southern power plant had two (2) 450 foot high older stacks that had Lead-Based Paint on the upper 300 foot of each stack. There were also some damaged areas where spalling had occurred which needed to be repaired. Removal of the lead containing paint was considered and determined to be very cost and time prohibitive as the plant had a year-end deadline to remedy this situation.

Encasement was found to be the preferred abatement option. First the stacks were scrubbed with a mixture of SES’s SE-Industrial Cleaner and water. Then SE-150 and SE-151 Architectural Sealants were used to repair the damaged areas. Next SE-110 Penetrating-Stabilizer (primer) was roller applied over all of the upper 300 foot of stack surfaces and allowed to dry. Then SE-120 Protective-Skin topcoat (tinted gray) was roller applied over all of the primed surfaces.
